In 1986, after Group B rallying was removed from the FIA regulations, Peugeot
used much of their experience developing the 205 T16 for the Paris-Dakar Rally and Pikes Peak
Hillclimb. Their first attempt at Pikes Peak, also known as The Race to the Clouds, was in 1987 with
the diminutive 205: the car that transformed Peugeot’s commercial fortunes after it was launched in
1983 and then went on to become a legend on the world rally stage thanks to the outlandish Group B
T16 version. At Pikes Peak, the plucky Peugeot driven by Ari Vatanen fought valiantly against Audi
but their Sport quattro won the event.
