To own a Hornby Dubo Set was for many the ultimate and to have one that featured a large Pacific locomotive was just a dream come true. The Hornby Dublo 'Duchess of Montrose' first appeared in a set during 1953 but it was some 5 years later that the set was repackaged and rebranded the 'Royal Scot'. The new graphics which featured a young boy looking excitedly at the trains in front of him, formed a visual template for other sets but it was the BR Green 'Duchess of Montrose' locomotive, plus two coaches and an oval of 3-rail track that really made the set stand out from the rest. Some 64 years later the new Hornby Dublo 'Royal Scot' Train Set makes a welcome return and features the new metal bodied 'Duchess of Montrose' in BR Green, plus two coaches and 3rd Radius Oval Track, Power Connecting Track and Re-Railer. Tri-ang Railways was formed in 1953 when Rovex Industries was obtained by the Lines Bros. New models from Tri-ang Railways occurred at an astonishing rate until by 1960 their range boasted many exciting train sets, locomotives, coaches, wagons, buildings and track.

The excitement of the Tri-ang Railways sets were superbly highlighted by imaginative full colour graphics in the annual Tri-ang Railways catalogue that not only depicted the trains but where sets were concerned invariably placed them in an action packed situation which just simply inspired and excited those young eyes that eagerly scanned the pages. The enigmatic images and the dramatic set titles were enough for the catalogues to be poured over for hours on end with hopes and wishes that for Christmas or maybe a birthday the train set which offered so much potential excitement would be the present most wanted.

For some the gift never arrived but memories of the endless time spent turning the pages of the dog eared Tri-ang Railways catalogue and the wishing and hoping never left them. Once again those wonderful halcyon and imaginative days can be relived with the introduction of the Tri-ang Railways Remembered Train Sets. Although the 'Lord of the Isles' had previously been made available in much larger sets, 1963 saw the introduction of 'The Victorian' which was a more traditional set and not only included the 'Lord of the Isles' locomotive, plus two clerestory coaches but also a simple oval of track. The popular set remained in the Triang Railways Set range for two years although the majority were sold in the first year. NB. This set does not include a wall transformer or controller.

The production of this Set had been delayed until the introduction of the R127 mobile crane but in 1963 the ‘Crash’ Train Set appeared and was an instant success. The catalogue image and descriptive copy simply told the story and fired the imagination as well as the demand for the Set. ‘Crash’ remained in the Triang Railways range for a period of three years and in that time over 19000 sets were produced and sold. W11 'Newport' is the Terrier that has been on the Island the longest and the only surviving engine to have served on the Isle of Wight Central Railway. In January 1981, 'Newport' had the honour of being the first locomotive to be worked on in the in the new workshop at Havenstreet, although the locomotive was pushed rather than travelling under its own steam. Hornby K&ESR Terrier 150th Anniversary Pack - Era 2/3

In 1872 the first of the Stroudley designed ‘Terriers’, No. 72 ‘Fenchurch’ entered service. This locomotive was the first of fifty that were built between the years of 1872 and 1880 and it is a testimony to the design there are still 10 examples in existence.

The Kent & East Sussex Railway has been synonymous with 'Terriers' since purchasing the 1872 built No. 70 'Poplar' in 1901. Having spent most of its life on the K&ESR, to celebrate its 150th anniversary the Railway commissioned 'Poplar's overhaul, with the locomotive now resplendent in its original livery of Stroudley 'improved engine green'

The second 'Terrier' No. 78 'Knowle' completes this celebratory brace of Stroudley's locomotives. Now preserved at the K&ESR 'Knowle' today carries the plain black Southern livery with 'sunshine' lettering. This Limited Edition of 500 has been produced with the full cooperation of The Kent & East Sussex Railway and loco owners, The Terrier Trust.

Hornby Southern Class 423 4-VEP EMU Train Pack - Era 10

Poor service saw the Network SouthCentral franchise transferred from Connex Trains, later renamed Southern in 2000. No serious attempt to update the units to the new Southern brand took place with only 4-VEP unit 3514 ever being painted into Southern green livery. The introduction of the Class 377 Electrostar units gradually saw the old and high millage 4-VEPs replaced. The final regular Southern 4-VEP service took place in August 2005, while Southern 4-VEP operations came to a final end with the Sussex Slammer rail tour occurring in November.

Hornby South West Trains Class 423 4-VEP EMU Train Pack - Era 10

When Southwestern was handed to South West Trains in 1996, the 4-VEPs they inherited were quickly repainted in a style largely based upon the NSE livery but also featuring an orange strip that combined with the old livery to match the colours of its parent company Stagecoach, and their distinct and common buses.
Towards the end of the 4-VEPs service units were reformed using the best condition carriages to prolong life. Despite this the units only lasted a few months more, finally being taken out of service in May 2005.

With the introduction of the new Class 800 and 802 IEP units on the Great Western Mainline GWR cascaded the remaining IC125 sets to rural routes shortening them to 4 passenger coach 'Castle' sets. This HST 'Castle' Train Pack contains two particular power cars.

Power Car 43004 entered service in September 1976 and was one of the prototypes for the Brush MTU engine upgrade, this occurring between September 2004 and June 2005. As a result, it did not receive a full overhaul as other members of the Class did, and so returned to Brush to receive Cab upgrades in November 2007. Its counterpart, 43155 entered service in January 1981 and was overhauled by Brush between April and October 2006. Following the FirstGroup's decision to buyout their partner's shares in Great Western Holdings, a decision was made to rebrand the Great Western Trains HST units to First Great Western (FGW). Visually this change involved the fitting of a new vinyl gold strip and colour fading as well as fitting new FGW logos. Power car 43136 entered service at the end of November 1979 and was overhauled and fitted with a new MTU engine between February and April 2007. Following a period of unprofitable operations, the InterCity East Coast franchise and associated HST units passed from NXEC to East Coast, an operator owned by the Department for Transport. The Advanced Passenger Train (APT) programme is remembered by many as one of British Rail's greatest embarrassments, an ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful design. The APT-P multiple units incorporated ideas that were well ahead of their time, most famously including a computerised tilting system which allowed the trains to navigate the tight turns of Britain's ageing railways up to 40% faster than anything else of the time.
The first APT-P unit was introduced in 1979 and the trains were progressively developed until 1987, the highlight being a period of passenger service between 1983 and 1985. Ultimately the complexity and cost of the unreliable APT saw it replaced by the simpler and considerably cheaper IC125 HST programme, but lessons learned were incorporated into the IC225 programme and later the tilting Alstom Pendolino trains still operating on the West Coast Mainline.

Ideally suited to the demands of suburban workings with frequent station stops, the M7 possessed quick acceleration and good tractive power, equally at home on Branch line workings or acting as station pilots. Unfortunately, following a major derailment at Tavistock in 1898, the Class were withdrawn from fast passenger services, the 0-4-4 arrangement proving inherently unstable at continuous high speeds. While two M7s still exist in preservation, 30244 sadly is not among them after being scrapped at Brighton. This particularly special Hornby model of 30244 comes uniquely liveried in the previously never produced Southern Malachite Green, a particular mark of rarity. Southern locomotive 21C146 entered service in November 1946 having been built to Bulleid's air-smoothed 'Light Pacific' design. From new the locomotive was allocated to the Exmouth Junction Shed where it remained until moving to Sailsbury in May 1951 and Brighton the following month. Under British Railways the locomotive was renumbered 34046. In January 1959 the locomotive was rebuilt to a more conventional design along with many other members of the 'West Country' Class. After re-entering service 'Braunton' was re-allocated to Bournemouth and remained there until being withdrawn from service in late 1965. Like many Southern locomotives scrappage was supposed to take place at Barry Scrapyard, however having stood there for many years the locomotive was selected for preservation, being returned to steam in 2007 after an extensive overhaul. LNER 4495 'Great Snipe', soon after renamed 'Golden Fleece' was delivered from Doncaster Works in 1937. After entering service 'Golden Fleece' was chosen to haul the 'West Riding Limited', effectively another 'Coronation' express but serving Newcastle and Bradford rather than Edinburgh. Under Thompson's 1946 numbering scheme the locomotive became No. 30, later becoming British Railways 60030 following nationalization. At the end of January 1935, a Kychap double blastpipe and chimney was fitted to the W1, which eventually required the fitting of a smoke lifting cowl for better smoke clearance. On August 21, 1935. 10000 was returned to Darlington for the last time in its original form, having covered another 20,823 miles since June 1934. 10000 had proved to be extremely capable, but it was also unreliable, as out of the 1,888 days in service, the locomotive spent 1,105 at Darlington Works alone. Production Details:

British Railways locomotive 35026 entered service at the end of 1948 and was soon allocated to the Stewarts Lane Shed in London. In January 1951 the locomotive was given the name 'Lamport & Holt Line' by the shipping company's London manager. The locomotive's home remained Stewarts Lane until 1957 when the locomotive was rebuilt with conventional Walschaerts valve gear and boiler casing.Next, 'Lamport and Holt' was moved to Exmouth mid-year and then Bournemouth towards the end of 1957, only to be returned to the Exmouth Junction Shed in May 1959.
